J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship 2023-24

J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship 2023-24 will be meant for candidates going overseas for higher studies. Please do not apply to this program if you intend to study in India. Application forms will be available on the official website of J N TATA Endowment from 3rd January till 7th March 2023.

The JN Tata Endowment was founded by Jamsetjee Nusserwanjee Tata in 1892 with the goal of providing loan scholarships to Indian students for overseas higher education based solely on merit, regardless of their background. Every year, around 100 scholarships are awarded to candidates from all parts of India and from various walks of life.

The majority of recipients choose to study subjects in the fields of applied sciences, IT and computing, engineering, management, law, economics, and a small number in other areas such as fine and performing arts. The United States is the most popular destination for JN Tata Scholars, followed by the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region. Many successful individuals have received scholarships from the J N Tata Endowment, including a number of illustrious figures.

Eligibility for J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship

  • Candidates should be Indian Citizen
  • Age should not be more than 45 years as on June 30, 2023
  • Candidate should be a Graduate or Post Graduate from a recognized Indian University with at least 60% marks on average in their undergraduate or post-graduate studies.
  • Candidates who did not get selected in the previous year/earlier for the loan scholarship and candidates who could not avail of the loan scholarship when they were selected are eligible to apply.
  • The above candidates have to follow the entire selection process once again along with fresh candidates.
  • Candidates who are at the end of 1st year or the beginning of 2nd year provided there is a minimum of 12 months remaining in their studies, at the time of award of the loan scholarship, which is usually July of any calendar year.
  • Candidates in the final year of their degree courses and those awaiting results are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates may apply even if they do not have the admission/offer letters at the time of making the application, from the Universities to which they have applied for the academic year 2023-2024.
  • However, they must update their application status with the Endowment once they secured admission by sending an appropriate email to jnte@tatatrusts.org by quoting the reference number which appears on the top left side of the form.
  • Candidates going overseas for seminars, conferences, training, workshops, paper presentation, undergraduate studies, and any post-graduate degree/diploma/certificates through Distance learning or online medium are not eligible to apply.
  • Candidates planning to pursue postgraduate and undergraduate studies in India are not eligible to apply.
  • The course to which candidates are admitted must be recognized as a Graduate Program (post-graduate in Indian terminology).
  • J N Tata scholars who have fully repaid their existing loan scholarship amount are eligible to apply.

 

Selection Process of J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship

Selection for the J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship

Candidates have to undergo a rigorous selection process for the award of the J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship. The selected candidates can say proudly as JN TATA Scholar.

Important Points to Note:

  1. The selection process will consist of four phases. Candidates will get updates about the status at the end of each phase.
  2. If any candidates submit a false or incomplete application, their application will get rejected. No queries will be entertained from such candidates.
  3. Candidates cant make any changes after the application submission.
  4. If they wish to make any changes or corrections to the application they have to send an email to jnte@tatatrusts.org by quoting the candidate reference number.
  5. Candidates should submit all the documents in grayscale pdf.
  6. Candidates have to read the information about the 4 phases of the application process very carefully, before the submission of the application.

Phase 1 – J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship

Ends on 7th March 2023, the final date of submission of the application. 

  • Candidates will be required to submit preliminary details such as personal and Academic Information, Work Experience, and a statement of purpose.
  • Scanned copies of the following documents should be uploaded:  
    • Candidate’s Photo (500*500 pixels in jpeg format)
    • Aadhar Card
    • Pan Card
    • Passport (First & Last Page)
    • Transcript/s for each qualification
    • Scorecards (GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS/PTE)

Important points for consideration

      • Consistent academic performance and participation in both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities will get good preference.
      • A good GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS/PTE score is extremely important.
      • If you have received low scores in any, it may be advisable to improve upon it, to increase your chances of receiving the loan scholarship.
      • The Statement of Purpose (SoP), which is assigned a score, carries considerable weight in the selection process.
      • Extreme care should be taken while drafting the SoP by the candidates, and ensure that the SoP is written by the candidates on their own, and it should be free from plagiarism.
      • Since you will be questioned during the interview on what you claim you have done, do not write about anything you have done but forgotten.
      • Instead, focus on your academic trajectory – current and projected.
      • The JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship is a highly competitive and coveted scholarship and a good SoP will strengthen your case.

Working professionals need to upload 3 additional documents

  1.  Work Experience certificate from the previous employer
  2.  Appointment letter from the existing employer and
  3.  Latest One-year ITR/3 months’ pay slips.

Phase-2: J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship Shortlisting for Online Test

  • Candidates who passed the initial screening will be called for the online test.
  • The shortlisted candidates will be intimated for the online test one week in advance.
  • Online Test
    • Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) and is scheduled to be held on Sunday, 9th April 2023.
    • This test will be conducted only once and those who fail to attend will be considered to have withdrawn.
    • This is not a subject-specific test
    • This test contains some numerical questions but does not presume anything more than knowledge of arithmetic and does not involve difficult calculations.
    • Uninterrupted internet connectivity is a mandatory requirement.
    • Candidates must also ensure that the device on which they take the test has a provision for video capturing (web camera).
    • The results of the test will be announced within a week from the date of the test by email.
    • No Correspondence in this regard will be entertained.

Phase-3: J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship

Shortlisting for Online Test

– Shortlisting for Technical Interview

  • Candidates will be shortlisted for the technical interview based on their performance in the online test.
  • Candidates who are shortlisted for the interview will be required to complete the application form by supplying information about their Applied University/Universities, proposed plans, source of funds, parents’ details, and guarantor’s details.
  • Scanned copies of the following documents should be uploaded
  • Letter of admission
  • Guarantor’s photo (500*500 pixels in jpeg format)
  • Guarantor’s Aadhar card, Pan card, one-year ITR/pay slip last 3 months
  • A Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is required (only one), specifically addressed to “The Trustees of the J N Tata Endowment” either from a Professor of the college or University or the employer, in case the applicant is/was working.
  • Candidates should only furnish the details of the recommender such as name, designation, department, name of the college/university/organization, city, contact number, and their official email ID.
  • The Endowment will directly communicate with the recommender for the purpose of the LoR (Letter of Recommendation)

The above information along with the required documents is to be completed before Sunday, 23rd April 2023.

Phase 4 – Interview

  • The interview is the final leg of the selection process.
  • Candidates will be required to update and confirm all information related to their studies.

Scanned copies of the following documents should be uploaded before the Interview

  • Final year mark sheets and degree certificate
  • Certificate of scholarships/ranks/prizes (if any)
  • Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities
  • Research work/Project work (only One)
  • GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS/ PTE scorecard
  • The rigorous technical interview is conducted from late April onwards, in person in Mumbai or through video conference via Skype/Microsoft Teams/Zoom by the Director of the Endowment and a subject expert.
  • Performance at the interview carries the highest weightage in the selection process.
  • ‘Technical’ refers to the evaluation of candidates’ understanding of their subjects – current and future.
  • The candidates will be examined in depth and detail, candidates should come prepared with knowledge of their subjects and chosen areas of interest with any specialization, as shown in their application form.
  • Candidates at the beginning of the 2nd year would be assessed also on their first-year/semester transcripts.

J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship Final Selection

The final selection of scholars for the award of the loan scholarship is based on the following criteria

(1) Performance at the interview
(2) Score at the online test
(3) Score based on academic results, GRE/GMAT/IELTS/TOEFL/PTE scores, statement of purpose, and work experience.

  • All the Awards will be announced together latest by the first week of July by mail.
  • The Trustees’ decision on the award of scholarships is final.
  • No Correspondence in this regard will be entertained.

J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship Post Selection Process

The following formalities to be completed by the selected scholars for the award of the J N TATA Endowment Loan Scholarship.

  • After obtaining the visa, the candidate’s parent/guardian has to visit the Administrative Office of the Endowment, with a prior appointment.
  • The Parent/Guardian has to enter into a legal agreement with the Trustees and provide documentary evidence of the capacity of the guarantor to repay the loan.
  • Candidates may repay the loan scholarship amount in full in five equal installments of 20% between the third and seventh year.
  • Candidates may begin to repay earlier than year three if they chose to.

General Information for the Guarantor

  • Each candidate must have a guarantor whose liability is on par with the candidate.
  • The guarantor should normally be a parent(s)/guardian of the candidate.
  • In the case of a married person, the guarantor can be a spouse or the parents-in-law.
  • In case parent/s/spouse are unable to be a guarantor owing to genuine reasons, a guardian or any relative (i.e. any member of the family such as brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, uncle, and aunt (both maternal and paternal) or any other relative may be the guarantor. )
  • A non-relative may act as a guarantor subject to the Director’s approval and submitting relevant documents.

Mandatory documents for the guarantor

  • Pancard, Aadhar card
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Income proof/latest ITR.
  • The details and documents will be requested in phase 3 of the application process.
  • Any changes related to the guarantor are subject to the Director’s approval.
  • Any change in the guarantor must be made before the loan scholarship amount is released.

01. What is the eligibility for the Loan Scholarships?

  • Nationality – Indian Nationals
  • Age – not older than 45 years as of 30th June 2023
  • Qualification – Graduates of a recognized Indian University

  • Candidates who are at the end of the 1st year of their overseas studies, with at least one full academic year remaining to complete at the time of award (normally by July of any calendar year)

The course to which candidates are admitted must be recognized as a Graduate Program (post-graduate in Indian terminology), where the entry requirement is an undergraduate degree.

02. When and where can I apply?

  • Applications for the Loan Scholarship will be open every year from December/January onwards till mid-March on our website www.jntataendowment.org
  • Candidates have to create a login ID and password to be able to apply.
  • Please note that you may create only one Login ID using your email ID.
  • This is not a downloadable form.
  • You may directly complete the application form online in one visit or more than one visit but you must remember to save the draft before you exit each time.
  • Candidates are required to validate the application form before final submission after which candidates will not be able to make any changes.

03. Can I apply even if I do not have confirmed admission?

Yes, you may. However, you must update the application status with the Endowment once your admission is secured, by sending an appropriate email to jnte@tatatrusts.org by quoting the reference number (which appears on the top left side of the form)

04. How and when will I get the status of my application form?

Candidates will know the status of their application in each phase. The status of the application form will be communicated appropriately through an email between March and June.

07. Is there any interest charged ?

The scholarship is offered at a simple interest of 2% per annum. However, Trustees may waive the interest if candidates repaid the loan by the end of the seventh year. The repayment schedule is in five equal installments of 20% between the 3rd and 7th years.

08. What is the minimum and maximum loan scholarship amount?

The loan scholarship amount ranges between Rs.1,00,000/- and Rs.10,00,000/-. All applicants do not necessarily qualify for the maximum amount.

09. Is there any other component?

  • There is a travel grant and a Gift award.
  • The selected scholars may also be recommended for partial travel assistance – a maximum of Rs.50,000/-
  • Gift awards from our allied Trusts may be decided at the sole discretion of the Trustees of the concerned Trusts.
  • The gift award ranges between Rs.2,00,000/- and Rs.7,50,000/-.
  • Gift award depends on the academic performance of the candidates in the course for which they are awarded the JN Tata loan scholarship.

10. Do you ask for any collateral security?

We do not insist on any collateral but applicants must have a guarantor. This is mandatory. The guarantor’s liability is on par with the candidate.

11. Who can be a guarantor and what is the guarantor’s responsibility?

  • The guarantor should normally be a parent(s)/guardian of the candidate.
  • In the case of a married person, the guarantor can be a spouse or the parents-in-law.
  • In case parent/s/spouse are unable to be a guarantor, a guardian or any relative (i.e. any member of the family such as brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, uncle, and aunt (both maternal and paternal) or any other relative may be the guarantor).

12. Do you have any format for the Statement of Purpose (SoP)?

  • There is no specific format but we do have expectations of a good SoP.
  • The most important point to note is that the Statement of Purpose is NOT a Personal Statement.
  • Candidates should not make very few biographical references.
  • Candidates shall explain why they have made a certain academic choice.
  • The SoP,  shall be addressed to the “Trustees of the J N Tata Endowment”.
  • Its an academic document in candidates’ own words, between 500 and 800.

13. Do you need a letter of recommendation (LoR) and is there any specific format?

  • One LoR which can be written by a Professor of the college or university where the candidate is studying OR the Employer, in case the candidate is / was working.
  • The LoR should be addressed to “The Trustees of the J. N. Tata Endowment”, and submitted online by the recommender.
  • Instructions for candidates & recommenders are available with the application form.

14. Do we have any questions bank available for an online test?

No, the online test is based on the lines of the Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA). This is not a subject-specific test and contains some numerical questions too but does not presume anything more than knowledge of arithmetic and does not involve difficult calculations.

15. When are the interviews held?

The interviews are held between late April and June.

16. Are the candidates reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews?

  • The candidates are not reimbursed for their travel and accommodation for the scholarship interviews.
  • Candidates also have an option to take the video conference interview via Skype/Microsoft Teams/Zoom.
